SmallA (1K) CONTENT:

SillyBooks is a wonderfully fun and educational reading site for kids. It includes animated cartoons, comics, children's music, picture books, puzzles and games

SmallA (1K) SITE DESIGN:

Bright colors and child friendly graphics make this site appealing to the younger set. Navigation is accomplished through a top menu bar or children can just click on the pictures and start reading.

REVIEW:

Parents, teachers and especially students will enjoy this site. It provides a wealth of reading materials for children. The books are animated, colorful and include music, sound effects and voices. As children follow along, the words are highlighted as they are read aloud providing hours of educational fun. In addition to the books, children will find cartoons, music, puzzles, games, and jokes. The classroom section provides some lesson plans for teachers and other support materials. A Writing Contest is in progress where students can send in their stories and have them published on the site. Monthly winners are illustrated and animated. This could be a great motivator for the classroom.

Worthwhile Web Sites
Children’s Writing Contest—Winning Entries to Be Animated and Posted Online

During the 2006-07 school year, http://www.sillybooks.net is having a writing contest for children ages 4 to 16. Entries can be fiction or nonfiction and cover any topic, but they must be under 300 words. One winner is being chosen each month—and each winning entry will be professionally illustrated, read and recorded by actors, put to music, animated in Flash, and posted on SillyBooks.net. Then, over the summer, readers can vote for their favorite book as the Grand Prize winner. In addition to having their books professionally published online, monthly winners will receive $25 and the Grand Prize winner will receive $200.

For inspiration, check out the professionally recorded and animated children’s books and songs on SillyBooks.net. The site is very child friendly (no inappropriate content or ads), and both the books and songs support beginning readers by highlighting each word as it is being read or sung aloud. The sample pages shown here are from one of their most popular books, Metamorphosis—you’ll have to go online to read the rest and to hear the adorable way this one is sung.
