A French-fry Called Frankie By Amanda Age 15 West Seneca, New York Hello, my name is Frankie. I am a French-fry. My story starts when I was a spud. When I was little I had to get my energy from the sun and water. When I was grown I was picked and put into a factory. There I was, being stripped and dipped, sliced and diced. I was then packaged and put in a box. When I woke up from my sleep I was in a place called McDonald's. A couple days passed when I realized I was about to be fried! OUCH! Today was the day it happened. I was bought and being taken home in a bag. All I heard was a little girl singing to Backstreet Boys. The car stopped. I knew what was coming. GULP! I'm about to get eaten. Well it's not too bad in here. It's moist and I see white squares everywhere. I am in the mouth! Wait, no; I've got to get out of here. OUCH, OO! I'm going through mechanical digestion with this girl's saliva. I'm a pile of mush. AHHH. I just fell down the esophagus and I'm going through the liver and into the stomach. It's kind of comfy. Wait it burns in here. Chemical digestion is taking place and the acids are breaking me down. I'm a lot smaller now. Here we go again. I'm moving at good pace for sight seeing. Where's my camera when I need it? I'm past the gall bladder and in the pancreas. The large intestine is my next stop. The wide yet short tube leads me to a skinny long tube called the small intestine where my nutrients get broken up and distributed throughout the body. All of my nutrients and protein I had were taken by more chemical digestion! Now I go straight to the appendix. I can tell my journey is almost over because I can see some light. I'm in the rectum, and now I see a white place. I'm out the anus and splash in the toilet. At least it's over. FLUSH! Here we go again. Our Family Vacation through the Digestive System By Cody Age 15 West Seneca NY Hello! My name is Kenny, and I am a cookie. This afternoon my family and I are going on vacation through the digestive system. Going on vacation with me is my wife Angela the apple, and my twin boys, pizza Pete and Tommy toast. We began our vacation on the plate. We sat there, and waited for our fork to arrive to take us to our first destination, the mouth. And finally at 12:30 p.m. we lifted off, and our vacation was about to start. Along for the ride with us, was a tour guide that was going to describe all of the things that are happening around us. As we entered the mouth the tour guide said "On your right, you will see the teeth beginning mechanical digestion, and to your left, you can see the saliva starting to digest chemically. Now hold on tight folks, we're now entering the esophagus!" After a few minutes of fast moving and peristalsis through the esophagus, we dropped down into the stomach. All around us, the stomach acid and bile was chemically digesting the food. We had to be careful not to touch the stomach acid, due to the fact that it is a strong acid. Suddenly we began feeling the peristalsis again, but this time we were in the small intestine, not the esophagus. The small intestine is filled with villi to help move and break down the food. "This is where the cells of the body take the nutrients from the food that humans eat." Said the tour guide. And just then, we were off to the next organ. "The large intestine is not used for breaking down food, or digesting anything" the tour guide said, "It is used to absorb the water from the indigestible material in humans digestive track." All around us I could see the water being taken in by the walls of the large intestine. The last stop on our journey is a place called the rectum. This is where undigested food leaves the body, and makes room for the next tour group. Over all, this was a very fun vacation for my family and I. I think we all learned a lot about the human digestive system! Sammy the Shrimp's Travels Through Bobby the Blobby By Chelsea Age 15 West Seneca NY Hi my name is Sammy the shrimp, today I got dipped in cocktail sauce and began a journey through Bobby the blobby. First I entered in a dark hole and big white walls started chomping down on me and began mechanical digestion. As this was taking place a wet, slimy substance started chemical digestion. Next I started to go down another dark hole into his esophagus. Then I went to a big pit known as his stomach. In the stomach more chemical digestion started to break down my nutrients. Now I'm making my way through a series of twists and turns known as Bobby's small and large intestines. Here all my proteins were taken in. After this I strolled by and waved to the appendix I went down to the rectum. Lastly I saw some light and I exited through his anus and kerplunked into a cold pool that gave me the shivers. I can't wait to see what happens next and if my girlfriend Amanda comes down after me! The Life of a Carrot By: Stephanie Age: 15 West Seneca, New York I was lying in my nice bed when something ripped me out! It was horrible! It took me into a strange place that I did not know; all I knew was the warm earth around me. It then peeled my orange skin off and cut me into layers. I was put with my neighbors in a large round container. As soon as I started to accept the fact the fact that I was in pieces, I was put into scorching hot water. I do not remember the rest. I must have blacked out. I woke up on a silver thing and then put into a dark mouth with big sharp white teeth. It chewed me to make a larger surface area and a liquid called saliva softened me. I slid down the esophagus where peristalsis took place and muscles squeezed me and let go and squeezed me again. I fell into a pit called the stomach. The stomach had acids called hydrochloric acid and pepsin that burned me. A creamy liquid called chime covered me. I was being chemically digested. I was pushed into a small intestine where it took all of my nutrients and my carbohydrates away. I went past the pancreas, gall bladder and the liver. They took things away from me like sugar and salts. I was then in the large intestine which removed all of my water and vitamins. All that was left for me was to be expelled from this foreign body. I'm Melting…! By Kristen PJ the peanut butter and jelly sandwich was completely dumbfounded non the way his sisters were digested. So he decided to find out. He wiggled his way into someone's lunchbag, where he hoped somebody would find him and eat him. Lucky for him, a dirty kindergartener found him and devoured him in practically two bites. The first place he encountered was the mouth. "Gee, this really hurts. I think I'm paralyzed," said PJ as he was chewed into little itsy-bitsy pieces. After spending about nineteen chews in the mouth, PJ was pushed down the throat and into the esophagus. Strong movement from muscles called peristalsis pushed him all the way down until he reached the sphincter of the stomach, then finally the actual stomach. "Wee, I mean ow! This really burns, I'm melting!" PJ spent some time being chemically digested by the acidic acid in the stomach. Not to mention some boogery mucus along the wall of it. With some help from bile from the liver and gall bladder, PJ became very broken down. The next stop was the small intestine. The first thing he noticed was that there were many folds and winding turns. Before he knew it, all of his nutrients were getting sucked away from him. "No I love you guys. Come back to me now," PJ sang. As his nutrients were getting sucked away, he kept moving slowly for a very long time. He ended up falling asleep, but he was eventually woken up by the large intestine. The large intestine sucked all the water out of him until he was very dry. He continued to pass through the large intestine, which was a much shorter ride. On his way he met a very nice organ named Albert the Appendix. He quickly discovered that Albert was depressed because Albert told him he hasn't been used in the last few centuries because humans weren't savages anymore, and didn't need his help to digest raw meat. Finally, he saw the light at the end of the tunnel as he passed out of the anus. "Well, that wasn't too pretty, but at least I know how digestion works now! Although it won't be of any use to me now because I'm just a little turd-ball, eww." A Cell Called Jimmy By Jim I'm Jimmy the cell. The way I function is like a factory. First we collect what ever we need by opening the doors to the cell and letting the products we need come in. When there done coming in we then close the doors and start our process. After we get our goods we let the nucleus or the research area get what ever we need. They know what to get because they see where we are lacking goods and then they tell the ribosome. The ribosomes are workers they make the goods on the endoplasmic reticulum. The endoplasmic reticulum is like the assembly line where everything is made. Some times minor adjustments are made on the endoplasmic reticulum but most of the time they go to the Golgi apparatus. What people usually don't realize is that if we don't have the mitochondria that none of this process would work and we would go out of business. The mitochondria powers our whole cell it is the " power house" of the cell. The mitochondrion runs on chloroplast, which is like gas in an engine. My Journey as a Pierogie By Elizabeth My journey started within the Polish Villa restaurant. As I was served to the customer my journey really started. I was first chemically and then mechanically broken down within the mouth. Then I would soon travel down the esophagus were I would land in the stomach. There in the stomach, I was then broken down again by gastric juices. The stomach would then absorb my protein. All the nutrients the body absorbs from me are then absorbed in to the blood stream were I feed all the hungry muscles. I would then end up in the small intestine were I would be broken down for the last time. Finally after a long time twisting and turning I end up with in the large intestine. When all water is absorbed out of me. I will then travel though the rectum, and then my journey ends in the anus. Penelope's Story… By Kelsey Age 15 West Seneca, New York Hi, my name is Penelope the piece of bread. Recently, all my friends have been telling me they're going on a trip to something called the "digestive system," and right after, they disappeared. I wonder where they went? Today is the day; I am going to see what's up. First off, Buster my friend picked me up and threw me into his mouth. It was quite the throw. Then, he started chewing on me with his teeth, it kind of hurt! There he was performing mechanical digestion on me, to break me down into little pieces. I kind of like being small! Next up was chemical digestion; he got me all wet with a slippery substance called saliva. It was really slippery. After, I was all wet, slimy, and broken, the mouth decided it was done. With a big red thing known as a tongue, it shoved me! I went down a slide, called the esophagus. It was scary at first, but it was fun. There Buster's mouth performed peristalsis on me; his muscles squeezed me down the slide! It was a great help. Next, I landed in a pink cave, called the stomach. There I took part in churning, and I got kind of dizzy. Acids mixed with me, and I got even smaller and wet. My next big trip was to the small intestine, it wasn't that small. There I found out Buster was a greedy person, because the pancreas, liver and gallbladder took away all of my proteins, carbohydrates, and fats! After I went into the small intestine. Then, the large one helped push me into the rectum, the last stop, until I got thrown away into a pool full of water. How rude! Arthur the Apple Tree By Tim Age 15 West Seneca, NY There once was an old apple tree. His name was Arthur. And this is how his life began. Arthur was once just a little apple seed from an apple of the tree of his mother. Then a farmer planted him on top of a hill hoping that Arthur would grow. And through the process of photosynthesis he grew. Photosynthesis is the use of sunlight and oxygen and water to create food. With photosynthesis the roots absorb the water from the soil, then it goes up through the trunk, throughout the tree, then goes to the leaves. That is where the sun is absorbed and photosynthesis occurs in Arthur. With photosynthesis Arthur is able to grow and he is able to make some of the reddest and best tasting apples ever. Arthur drank so much water and gathered so much sunlight he became one of the biggest apple trees in the world. And he was able to make some of the best apples in the world. He got all of the water and food to help him grow from the ground. And the water and food went through his roots and into the rest of Arthur the apple tree. So remember to eat healthy and drink your water to grow big and strong like Arthur the apple tree. Shuichei The Kiwi By John? In a small town in Tokyo Japan, a simple Kiwi had an awful big dream. He wanted just wanted to meet his family once again. This Kiwi's name is Shuichei. All he remembers is who took his family away, and that man is Farmer Fuji. Shuichei tried many ways to get Farmer Fuji to take and eat him, but what Shuichei did not know was that he was unripe and not ready to be eaten. But that day was rapidly approaching. One morning and Shuichei was still asleep. Farmer Fuji was harvesting and he was plucked. Later that day, Shuichei was sliced and diced and tossed into a fruit salad. Shuichei was as angry as a hippopotamus with a toothache. As Farmer Fuji started eating, parts of Shuichei was tossed aside and not eaten at all. Shuichei began to feel better. Then the Farmer picked up a spoon and scooped Shuichei into his mouth, bit by bit. He was chomped by the teeth and dissolved by the salivary glands, swallowed into the esophagus and down into the stomach. The high acidic stomach acid slowly dissolved Shuichei. By now passed he through the stomach and slipped into the small intestant. Shuichei was having a blast as his nutrients and vitamins were absorbed through the small intestant. Eventually he moved into the large intestate. As he dropped he heard voices he hasn't heard in such a long time, it reminded him of his family, little young Shuichei peeked his head up and there they were his mother Lutashia, father, Comodo, and brother, Sasuke. A tear was brought to Shuichei's eye as they passed through the Rectum. At that moment everyone knew they would be together forever. The Big Rumble By Michele As I was sitting on my couch with Kaylee watching TV, all of a sudden we heard this noise coming from Kaylee's stomach. It was a "rumble" and a "rawr." Kaylee and I didn't know what it was so we thought that we were just hearing things. "Rumble, rawr." We heard it again. We started to get scared. We ran into my bathroom and locked ourselves in there until my dad came home. Then we heard someone pounding on my door; my dad was home. We told him about the weird noise in Kaylee's stomach, and he said that she was just hungry. So we went into the kitchen and made some macaroni and cheese. After we ate, we went back in my room and started watching some more TV. Kaylee ended up falling asleep for ten minutes. All of a sudden she just popped up and said, "woah!" I asked her what that was for. She said in her dream that she turned into the macaroni and cheese and went through the digestive system. Kaylee said she started off in the mouth, then went into the esophagus. After that she went and visited the stomach where she was broken down mechanically, and chemically. Next was the small intestine where she was broken into smaller pieces, and then into the large intestine where all the water was absorbed. Finally she said she went to the rectum and came out of the anus, and landed in my toilet eww gross. That's weird I said, we finally know how the digestive system works. The Neutralizing Antiboties Vs. The Volatile Viruses By Aaron Age: 16 West Seneca, New York The Neutralizing Antiboties get ready to take on the Volatile Viruses at the Human Body Arena in the Immune system. They are getting ready to enter the Volatile Virus' illegitimate homestead and show them whose boss. The hockey game is minutes away and the Antiboties are ready to leave the locker room and obliterate the Viruses from the illegitimate home. They finally get into position in the immune system, at center. The ref drops the puck and the Antiboties pound the Viruses into the walls of the Alimentary canal. The puck is cleared in front of the net and the Viruses steal it back and score shorthanded defeating the Antiboty defender in front of the net. The Antiboties bring it back on an odd man rush and are able to tie the score at 1. As the fight goes on, the Antiboties are able to go around in the Virus' zone and destroy every play and move that the viruses trt to make. The Antiboties end up scoring 4 times in the first round, in contrast to the Viruses I goal. After a brief break, the two teams are at each others throats again. The Antibotiies crush the Viruses in the second round, scoring 6 times. After a second break, the Antiboties obliterate the Viruses from the fight by scoring another 6 times. The final score was 16-1. The Flower and the Duck By Katie Age 15 West Seneca, New York Once upon a time, there was a little flower named Sophie. She lived in a giant field next to an old farmhouse. For a while Sophie had no one to talk to so she would sit all day and stare at the farmhouse. One day a duck named Bill came to visit Sophie. Soon after they became best friends. Bill would come out every day and talk with Sophie. They found out many things about each other. One morning Bill came out and said, "I'm so hungry". Sophie asked why. Bill said, "I have to find and eat food to get the nutrients and energy that I need". Sophie said, "Well I can make my own food through photosynthesis". Bill was amazed and made her explain how she did it. First, she told Bill, " I have things in my leaves called chlorophyll these absorb the sunlight but only certain kinds. For example, they absorb violet, blue and red kinds of light but don't absorb green, yellow or orange kinds of light". Sophie also said, "The outer covering of her leaves is called the cuticle. This keeps the water in the leaf after it rains. It is so refreshing". Bill's jaw feel to the ground and Sophie continued, "With all of these things combine and a little bit of carbon dioxide, which is the stuff you breathe out, I am able to make. Bill said, "Sophie I think you are so cool and I want to be just like you". Sophie just laughed to herself because she knew that creatures like him couldn't do the things that she could. The Great Adventure By Erica Age 15 West Seneca, NY Everyday our body endures something new. Whether you're healthy or have the flu. Here's a little lesson I would like to teach. It would be more exciting if our food could speak. Aha! But wait! This is our story! We can make it great! There are many systems that make our bodies go. So sit back and go with the flow! The digestive system gives us energy we need. All we have to do is feed! The nervous system helps us move. Giving us the idea to groove! The skeletal system gives us shape. We wouldn't look too appealing in the form of a squished grape! The respiratory system makes our insides flow. Believe it or not, they're anything but slow! The muscular system makes us strong. But watch lifting those weights, something could go wrong! Our systems work together hand in hand. Without them we probably couldn't even stand! Wasn't this little poem grand? Now you know what goes on inside. Stop by next time for another good time! The Digestion Rollercoaster By Brendon Hello I am Bobby Brownie and I live with my lovely wife Whitney Waffle. We have two children, Michael Meat and Janet Jam. The kids just got out of school for the summer so we decided to go for a family trip to visit our relatives that are about 2100 crumbs away. While we were there we went to this sweet amusement park. At the park we went on the world's longest rollercoaster, The Digestion Rollercoaster. The ride started off on this thing called a plate. The plate is like the seats where we got buckled down with string beans. This rollercoaster is very different from other, more common rollercoaster. Instead of having cars and straight lines of people, we all sat on the rim of the plate. The middle part of the plate was cut out so you can see what's going on below you. The next part of the rollercoaster is the arrival at the top of the hill. When we got there we entered this place and sat there while the walls closed around us. The walls were big whitte things, that kept getting closer to us. They looked like they were going to mechanically chomp down on us. But luckily this liquidly stuff stated pulling us away. The liquid stuff actually started to eat at the bottom of the plate. Then all of a sudden we were being pushed from behind by what looked like a muscle. It was a long trip down. Then we landed in this big room with yellow liquid that had the aroma of acid. From there we were lowered to this very small and long tube. The plate that we were on, hardly fit between the walls. But again we were being pushed by a muscle. Then another tube? This one was much shorter and wider. All of a sudden I felt myself falling. We exited the ride at the rectum. I thought to myself that, that was the best rollercoaster I have ever ridden. |
Meet The Circulatory System By Sarah-Jayne Age 15 West Seneca, New York I am a vein. I pump blood all day. I carry the blood to the heart and send it on its way. I am an artery. I receive the blood from the heart. I pump the blood down, and around, and then the process restarts. I am a capillary. I connect the arteries and veins. Without me the nutrients, by the blood could not be obtained. We all work together, in the circulatory system. We help each other out, as well as each and every other system. If you took all us blood vessels out, we would stretch over 60,000 miles. Surprising as that is, that's 15 times longer than the Nile. I am a red blood cell. Without me, your heart would stop. 5,000,000 of my buddies can be found in just one blood drop. I am a white blood cell. I help to fight off infection. The doctors make me immune to things, by giving me an injection. I am a platelet. I help to stop the bleeding. when you cut yourself and the blood leaks out, I am there already healing. We work all day and work all night, to do our best we strive. For if we gave up on our fight, you would not still be alive. The Little Mermaid; Ariel Learns about her Hair By Samantha Age 15 West Seneca New York One day while brushing her long red hair, Ariel wondered, "I wonder how my hair got to be the way it is. How does it grow, where does it come from, and why is it the color that it is?" Luckily for Ariel, her good friend Sebastian heard her, and knew the answers to all of her questions. "come with me my dear and I will give you just what your looking for." Then, Sebastian took Ariel into the world of her hair. "You see Ariel, hair is made at the base of a hair follicle, and there are thousands of hair follicles on your head. You only use about 80% of your hair follicles at a time. When new follicles start working again, they push out the old hairs and replace them with new ones." "So basically my hair grows out of tiny holes in my head?" Ariel asked. "Precisely," Sebastian answered. "Now," Sebastian started, "the color of your hair came from your parent my dear. Your mother and father have red hair, so you do too." "Oh, I get it! My parents both have red hair, so i do because it's heredity!" Ariel exclaimed. "Exactly," Sebastian told her, "You are so smart Ariel!" Then Ariel and Sebastian left the hair world and went back to the ocean. "Thank you so much for teaching me all about my hair, Sebastian. I've always loved to play with my hair, but now I know where it comes from and why it is the color that it is." Ariel said. "No problem my dear," Sebastian started, "It's always a pleasure to teach you something new. One day you are going to be the smartest girl in the ocean!" "Awe thanks Sebastian!" Ariel yelled. Journey To A New Home By Brooke Age 15 West Seneca NY There was a family that was about to take a journey to a new home. Molly, the slice of ham is going with her brother, the slice of cheese and her two parents that are bread into the mouth. They see a big white fence blocking them. So they only have one way to go. All of a sudden a drench of amylase covers them. Molly begins to wander ahead. She comes to the entrance of the esophagus. Then her brother comes running. Before you know it they both are going down the esophagus. Peristalsis is squeezing them down. They see a sign that says, " Welcome to the stomach." Molly's brother starts splashing around in the pool of pepsin. A few seconds later Molly hears her mother and father yelling for her brother to come back. Her brother is drifting farther away. So they decide to jump into the pepsin. They soon realize that they are being mix around. They haven't seen her brother in a while. The place looks different. Molly's dad begins to tell some story that her grandpa wrote in a letter. Her dad says this is the small intestine. Her mother begins to worry that her son got stuck in the villi. While her mother is worrying, Molly is beginning to get stuck in the villi that surround them. Her dad says she is going to be absorbed. Her mother pulls her daughter out. Her mother spots her son up ahead. The three of them run ahead. Her mother is pulling on him. But he's not coming loose. Molly cries to her dad to help. He helps, her brother is not coming out. Molly is now crying. Her dad shouts for her to help. She joins them pulling him. Finally, her brother is out of the hairy villi. They hold onto each other as they enter the large intestine. They all are smaller in size from the villi brushing against them. Now, these blow dryers are sucking water out of them. Finally their long journey is over. They are going to their new house. Bucki's Flower Power By Julie Age 15 West Seneca, New York Bucki's Flower Power! 1. Once upon a glorious morning, Sara The Sun peeked out from behind the clouds and cast her beautiful sun rays upon Bucki The Dandelion. Bucki opened his leaves of joy and smiled at the glorious sun. He could feel the solar energy beating down onto his smooth green body, tapping each petal ever so slightly. His chloroplasts were calling and absorbing each ray of sunshine. They were so pure and filled with chlorophyll. He was ready to begin his sacred process that would continue his life on the glorious green Earth, photosynthesis. Bucki's Flower Power 2. His limp body was starving for food; he was ready to tango with water, carbon, and light. Each one was sucked slowly into each chloroplast and Bucki The Dandelion sang with delight. The chloroplasts flowed through Bucki The Dandelion and sang the "Cha Cha" loudly. The chloroplasts were shaking those reactants up, and out came a burst of sugar. It flowed through Bucki's body and out through his tiny holes came an explosion of oxygen into the free flowing air; perhaps it will float to Sara The Sun. Bucki The Dandelion was gleaming from ear to ear and was now stronger than ever; he was ready for action. Bucki's Flower Power 3. Bucki spent his day soaking in more of Sara's solar energy and smiling so happily, as if he accomplished something great; it was quite a beautiful day. His day would have been amazing except his mortal enemy Bob the lawn mower came out behind the shadows. It approached him, going at a slow pace; he could feel everything within himself yelling, "run away" we're a package deal. He really tried to but he realized he was a dandelion. It came closer and closer, until it was finally time fro him to meet his maker. But all of a sudden the lawn mower stopped, Bucki The Dandelion cheered with joy and grinned at Sara The Sun; he said "Sara I need your rays too." and chomp, Phil The Rabbit ate him, root and all. Don't ask me what happened to him, that's another story. Ben the Bean Sprout By James? One sunny day Ray Beam had decided it was time to shine. That's when Ben the Bean sprout stuck his head out of the ground for the first time. When Ben the Bean sprout looked up he saw Ray. "Wow" he said to Ray, "you sure are bright." "Yes I give off light to let you grow." "How do I do that?" "Open your leaves and grows." " I am, but nothing's happening!" "Take in water through your roots." Said Ray "OK" Then all of a sudden he began to grow. "I'm doing it, I'm doing it!!" "Good Job" said Ray," One day you might be as tall as Terry the tree!" Terry the tree was a great big mustard tree. "Wow Terry you sure are big" said Ben. "Yes but I use to be so tiny I could get stepped on by an ant!" "But you're so big!" said Ben "Just keep trying and never give up." "Ok I will." Ben said But if you look at Ben today you will see that he and Terry are best friends because they are the same size. Jelly and the Digestive System By Jessica Age 15 West Seneca, New York I'm about to take you through the digestive system. Allow me to introduce myself to you. My name is jelly and I was once apart of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When I was made and ready to be eaten, the first place I went to was in the mouth where chemical and mechanical digestion took place. After I've been chewed, the muscle in your throat called the pharynt, helps you to swallow. Before you enter the esophagus you, have to pass through a little flab called an epiglottis. This is so that nothing enters the trachea and you don't choke. Passing through the esophagus only takes a few seconds. The stomach is the next place I go to and I sit there for about two hours. While I'm in the stomach , gastric juices help break down the food into energy that is needed in the body. This was my least favorite part in the digestive system. After the stomach, I begin to make my way through the small intestine. This is a long process because the small intestine is about eighteen feet long. I'm the only part of the sandwich that went through the large intestine beacuse the rest of the sandwich was needed by the blood for energy. This process took place in the small intestine where it passed through into the blood stream and then was carried by millions of blood cells. Since I wasn't needed, I'm referred to as feces, or undigested material. After I made my way through the large intestine, my next last stop is to the rectum where I get pushed out through the anus and "BLOOP", the digestive system is complete. Jest Sittin' on the Shelf… By Charlene Age 15 West Seneca, New York One day, I was sitting on the shelf at Nino's Pizza, looking great. My cheese was evenly spread, I had just enough sauce, and my crust was perfectly rounded. I had the right amount of pepperoni to taste simply delicious! "Oh-no!!" I suddenly got picked up and shoved into some lady's mouth. "Ahhhh...." I was being chewed into a million little pieces! Then I went down this long tube known as the esophagus and peristalsis moved me through. I quickly found myself in the stomach where I was churned and I got covered with a very strong acid. "Oww!!!" Next, I traveled into the small intestine where all of my nutrients got absorbed. Bile, which is produced by the liver, helped break me down into even smaller molecules. At this point there wasn't much left of me. Then, I traveled down the large intestine where all of my nutrients and some of my water got absorbed. Now all that was left of me now was undigested materials, which formed into feces. Before I knew it, I was in the rectum where I got stored for a while. By this point in my journey I was very tired, so I decided to take a nap. I was woken very quickly when I was pushed down the anus and I splashed into this big white bowl of water. I swirled and I swirled. Lastly, I was flushed down this little hole. That was the end of my journey through the human body!! Billy and The Cloning Experiment By Steven Age: 15 West Seneca, New York There once was a little boy named Billy. He was a very lonely little boy because he was an only child; however, he did have a little dog named Joel. One day while Billy was watching the TV, he happened to pass a documentary on cloning. Then it came to him! Billy decided to clone his dog Joe, so they would both have a new friend. The next day Billy decided to go to a laboratory and see if they could clone Joel. Billy talked to Professor McQuade who said it would cost a lot of money to get this operation because of the complicated procedure. Ironically, Billy had saved up just enough and Professor McQuade agreed to perform the procedure tomorrow. Billy anxiously arrived the next day with Joel. Professor McQuade was waiting for them in the waiting room. He then explained the operation to Billy. First Professor McQuade said that he would have to take the sex cells from Joel and combine them in culture with the eggs of a female donor. Next, the nucleus would be removed from the egg cell and then the cells are fused and grown in culture. Then the newly formed cell would be placed into a surrogate mother to house the newly cloned Joel. Professor McQuade told Billy that Joel's clone would be born in about nine weeks. Nine weeks went by and Billy returned to pick up their newly cloned dog the called Cole. Billy was very happy that Joel had a new friend to play with and that he had a new dog to train and love. Billy thanked Professor McQuade and went on to lead a happy life. Chippy the Cookie By Mary Age 15 WestSeneca, NY Hi Everyone! My name is Chippy the Cookie and I'm about to go for ride. It's called the digestive system. I've heard many stories about the ride, but this will be my first time. Come on, you can tag along! First you have to go through the gates; I think they're called teeth. While they start munching me up, this sticky stuff, Saliva, starts breaking me down chemically. When the work is done in the mouth, I start to go down this long tube named the esophagus. It feels pretty cool though because of this squeezing all around me, pushing me down (It's called Peristalsis, if you didn't know). After this a ring of muscles called the sphincter opens up. Wheee! Now I fall in to the big pit, the stomach. Now the action really starts! The stomach starts squirting out gastric juices that also help break me down. And then there's the churning! That's fun, too. Just as the work is almost finished, another sphincter opens up and I get pushed into the small intestine. This is where all my nutrients get absorbed through the villi and the micro-villi. Then it's on to the large intestine, where all the excess water is absorbed. Finally, the rides all over and I exit through the anal sphincter. That was fun! Apple Story By Austin Age 15 West Seneca, NY I am an apple and I'm unfortunately about to be eaten by this kid. And here I go. I'm now entering the mouth were the tongue and salivary glands are located. CHOMP…well there goes a part of me. I'm being broken down by mechanical and chemical digestion. Now I have entered the esophagus and being pushed down into the stomach my some kind of muscle contraction. I think its peristalsis. I'm in the stomach now and being broken down by pepsin and some other kinds of gastric juices. Now on to the small intestine. There are tickly things called villi around me. All my nutrients are being taken from me by these villi. That's not cool. My body is being passed throughout the entire body including the blood stream. Whatever is left of me is going into the large intestine. Well there goes all my water. Man I'm going to be nothing but…well…nothing. I spoke to soon. Crap…literally, crap! I'm in the rectum. Now I'm in the anus. I took on a new color brown. I've been inside this kid for more than a day. Well unfortunately I have to go…well the kid has to go anyway. Bye….flush. Meg the Egg By Breanna This morning I was placed into a carton. Next I was on a truck headed to the supermarket with all my brothers and sisters. When I arrived at the supermarket I was placed on a very chilly shelf. Am I going to be bought? The next hour I was picked up off the shelf by a human named Michele. After she bought me I was put in Michele's fridge. It was also very cold in there. What is Michele going to do with me? The next day I was the only one taken out of the carton. How come my brothers and sisters weren't taken out with me? Now Michele is cracking my shell and my yolk and white were placed into a sizzling pan. Ouch! I think I am being cooked. Finally I am taken out of the pan and placed on a plate. Michele then stabbed me with a fork and put me in her mouth. Her teeth and salivary amylase broke me down into smaller pieces. Next I was pushed down a dark tube called the esophagus. When I got to the end of the tube I dropped into a dark pit called the stomach. Now I am being churned and mixed with everything else Michele ate today. EWW! It feels slimy and gross. Now I am traveling through a never-ending tube called the small intestine. Little hair-like structures called villi are tickling me. The villi are absorbing my nutrients. Finally I've reached the long intestine. The water that is left in me is now being removed. I can't even see myself anymore because Michele's body broke me down and absorbed my nutrients so she can obtain energy and keep her muscles strong. It all started out on the shipping docks… By Caitlin Age:15 Buffalo, New York It all started out on the shipping docks, where some oddly shaped men in desperate need of a lunch break unpacked me. Once unloaded, I was stocked onto the shelves of Wegmans, and there I was purchased by a family, who put their hungry stomachs in charge of my destiny. Soon I was put into the microwave, where I would be popped and soon consumed. As I entered the mouth of the teenagers, I was mechanically digested by the teeth and I was also broken down by the wet saliva from the salivary glands. After becoming near identical pieces, I plunged into the deep dark esophagus, where only partial light illuminated the slippery slopes. As I was sliding down to what seemed to be a never-ending tunnel, I dropped into the stomach. I was constantly pushed and shoved to be broken down more. It was like a riot. It was just too much. No more than a few minutes passed by, and the painful gastric juices turned me into chyme. Soon after, I quickly slid though the liver and gall bladder, where they stripped me of my precious nutrients. After having to go through such stress, I was broken down more by entering the small intestine. While traveling such a long and sticky tunnel, I kept thinking to myself if it would ever end. After pondering for such a time, I dramatically plunged into the large intestine, where my leftover water was absorbed. After sliding down the shortest of the intestines, I fell into the rectum, and later left through the anus. If only it would've ended there. Within a few minutes I was flushed. There, my journey ended, and I would soon begin down the sewer system. But that my friend, is a story to tell for another day. Okay, guys… start churning… By Alex Age 15 West Seneca, New York We get a message to start churning from the brain. It said incoming and start up the defenses for the food! So we started to churn and seconds later a bombardment of food started to rain from the esophagus. It was an all out battle between the food and us. But the thing was we started to win until the protein started to fight. The protein did not know that we had a special weapon, Mr. Hydrochloric Acid. We have used this on everyone else and it has always worked. When we released him he begins the break down the protein. After the Mr. Hydrochloric Acid was released the food began to flee to the small intestines. But little did they know that bile the fat eating liquid was out to get them. By now they have turned into mushy chyme. As well as getting attacked by the bile they had had all the nutrition sucked out of them by the villi. By the end of the small intestine the food had given up and we had won. Now the last step was to pass them through the large intestine and take all of their water. We had another successful win over the food, but it might not be next time. Adventures with Sally the Skeleton By Tina Hi, I'm Sally the Skeleton. I am an adult so I have 206 bones in my body. When I was a baby I had over 300 bones in my body, but those bones joined together. My job is to support the body and protect internal organs. I also determine the shape of your body. If you didn't have any bones, then you wouldn't be able to move. Right now, I am going to take you on a journey through my body, and I will tell you about all of the kinds of bones. There are four kinds of bones in your body. Long bones are in your arms and legs. These bones are straight. Short bones are in your fingers and toes. They make your fingers and toes move. Flat bones are thin and flat. They protect the organ they surround. Sesamoid bones are accessories (like jewelry for us girls) to other bones nearby. The knee cap works to connect the bones of the upper and lower leg. The irregular bones are unique in shape. Their structure is directly related to their job in the body. Bones have two purposes. Your backbone helps you stand up. Your skull is like a helmet to protect your brain. That explains all of what I do in a person's body. I hope you had an amazing adventure, and that you have learned things about your body. |
