THE IMAGINATION BOX
By Caitlyn
Grade 8
Jensen Beach, Florida

There was once a little girl named Sally who was only eight years old, but she had a huge imagination. It was ten times her size.
Sally was very creative and had lots of fun ideas. But this huge imagination was not leaving her time to do her school work. So, she had an idea to store part of her imagination somewhere.
She and her friend, Pete, decided to collect boxes to make a big, box building to store her imagination. They asked parents and friends for boxes and collected a lot!
They spent all day building the big box building. They stacked boxes on top of each other to make the big box building. When they were satisfied, they agreed to meet there the next day.
They showed up the next morning in front of the big box building. The first thing they did was name it the Imagination Box. Then they went inside and let out some of their imagination.
Sally and Pete loved their new Imagination Box. They could do anything there because they used their imaginations. They went on jungle adventures, they fought pirates, they climbed mountains, and they could even race cars or horses! They had so much fun!
One day they met at their Imagination Box and found a garbage man about to knock down the boxes. They screamed, “Stop!” and told him not to knock it down because it was their imagination box. The garbage man agreed and left.
Sally and Pete continued to have fun in their Imagination Box. Sally had been doing much better in school because part of her gigantic imagination was in the Imagination Box. She and her friend continued to play in their Imagination Box and lived happily ever after.

A turtle called Max was walking on the bank of the river wearing his favorite hat.
He was distracted thinking about who to invite to his picnic…
As he was walking, he accidently tripped over a stone and dropped his hat in the river.
Oh no! he thought, as he started wondering how he would get his hat back.
Suddently, a fish popped out of the water and got Max’s hat and brought it back to him.
“Thanks for getting my favorite hat back”, said Max happily!
“You’re welcome!” “My name is Mike… I have no friends and I haven’t eaten in 6 days”, said Mike sadly!
“My name is Max, and I’m looking for someone to invite to my picnic”. “Do you want to go to my picnic with the rest of my friends?
It is on the other side of the river”.
“Sure, I love picnics!” answered Mike.
So the two new friends went to Max’s picnic and celebrated their new friendship.

The Car that Wouldn’t Run
By Michael
Jensen Beach
Florida
Grade 8

There once lived a very rich man named Frank Magilla. He was really into cars, and loved to collect them. Old, new, it didn’t matter. Frank collected them all.
One day Frank decided to take his favorite car and take it on a ride. He sat in the car, put his seatbelt on, turned the key, and......nothing happened.
Since Frank has so many cars, he just thought he had the wrong key. So, he looked through all of the hanging keys. Then he said, "That’s the one!"
Frank got back in the car, put his seatbelt on, put the key in the ignition, again, and turned the key. This time...... nothing happened.
So with no other solution, Frank thought to himself, maybe it just needs a little push. But Frank’s "little" push sent the car down the driveway and it crashed into a tree.
Since the bumper was broken, Frank just decided to take the car to a shop to get fixed, and maybe they will know why it won’t run. So, he had the car taken to a nearby shop on a tow truck.
Frank Spent 500 dollars to get the bumper fixed. Then he asked the repair man if he knew why the car wouldn’t run. The repair man replied, "Well that’s an easy question, cars don’t have feet!”
“THATS NOT WHAT I MEAN!" said Frank.
The repair man knew what Frank meant, he was just joking around. He took one .
As Frank was driving home, his breaks failed, and he veered off the side of the road, totalling his car.

The Lonely Tree
By Tim
Grade 8

Once upon a time, there was a lonely tree
He could not be free.
Then all of a sudden, a shadow appeared…
But the tree stood tall, and showed no fear.
“Hello,” said the figure, and then the tree saw it was a dog.
“I’m ok, but you scared me,” said the tree. “I couldn’t see that you were just a dog in this fog.”
“Anyway, I was wondering if you could help me?” said the tree.
“I want to be free and make some new friends,” said the tree. “But I’m only a tree.”
“I cannot help you, I’m only a dog, sorry” said the dog. And the dog walked away.
Then the tree noticed a figure in the fog. It looked like a cat.
“Hello cat, I would like to know if you could help me,” said the tree.
“Hello tree. What is this task you ask of me, what could it be?”
“I want to see the world and make friends,” said the tree. “Could you set me free?”
“I’m only a cat,” said the cat. “Setting you free would be too much for me, so I’ll let you be.”
“Will anyone help me?” cried the tree. Then a mouse appeared.
“Hello old tree, how are you?” asked the mouse.
“I’m sad, no one will help me be free so that I can make some friends,” said the tree. “Would you help me?”
“I cannot help you, but I can be your friend!” said the mouse. “I hope that helps!”
“Thank you so much, I shall be free! Free from this lonely misery!!”

The Monkey Who Lost His Banana
By Jose
Grade 8
Jensen Beach, Florida

There once was a monkey named Johnny. He was very happy; he had a great family, and lived in a happy big tree.
His fur was brown and his face was big and round. On his big, round face he had big blue eyes and a small little nose, big shiny teeth and cute little ears.
When Johnny the monkey was swinging with his family he found a banana. With great joy he let out a screech, "I found a banana now I'm happier then ever!”
While walking home, he somehow lost his banana. He was very sad so he started looking everywhere.
He looked in the tree but there was no sign of his banana.
He looked in the river but again, there was no sign of his banana.
He looked up and saw a big, brown bird nest. In it he saw something that he recognized.
He had found his banana! So, he climbed the tree and saw two eggs. By accident the nest fell! The eggs landed safely, but not in the nest
He waited for the mother of the eggs to come back. When she got there she was very mad at the monkey. Johnny said he was sorry many times but he still felt bad for breaking their home.
The next day, Johnny came to offer her a space in his tree and a piece of his banana. After that, Johnny the monkey had a new friend for life!

When he heard that he was going to the doctor he wanted to bring his favorite play toy with him to keep him company. There was just one problem-he couldn’t find it.
He went and looked under his bed, but it wasn’t there.
Next, he looked near his food and water bowl, but no luck.
After he searched and searched, he went to ask his buddy, Scaredy Cat, but Scaredy Cat said, “I haven’t seen it.”
Now, just before Cool Cat was to give up, he saw his best friend, Kelly Kitten. He thought for sure that she would know because yesterday they were playing with it. But to his surprise she said she hadn’t seen it.
Then Cool Cat cried and cried all night until the doctor gave him a lollipop to stop crying.
When Cool Cat was done with the x-ray the doctor told him that the pain he was having was from him swallowing his play toy!
The doctor reached down into his tummy and pulled out the toy. While Cool Cat was jumping with joy the doctor washed off the toy.
Finally when Cool Cat got home, he told all his friends about what happened and then they played with the toy and lived happily ever after.

When Little Manta Ray Was Lost…
By Blaine
Grade 8
Port St. Lucie, FL

Once upon a time there was a large daddy manta ray and a small baby ray. They both were brown with big white spots.
They lived in a big piece of coral filled with lots of small fish to play with and eat.
One day they went out for food. When they were stalking a fish, they became separated. Daddy ray tried to find baby ray but couldn’t see him anywhere. So he searched and searched yet saw nothing but other fish.
He went to Mr. Seahorse’s house and asked if he saw baby ray but Mr. Sea horse hadn’t see him since the day before. So daddy ray said, “Thanks for your help,” and left.
Then he went over to where Mrs. Starfish stayed and asked the same question. This time he did get some information. Mrs. Starfish saw baby ray swim by a while before.
Then he was swimming south and encountered his son’s friends-Jake, a flounder, and Buzz, an electric eel. They both said he went west.
Daddy ray headed west and saw some awesome fish on the bottom of the ocean. The fish just swam faster, out of fear mostly.
Eventually he came to a huge wall and when he looked around he saw his son swimming! So, he quickly swam up to his son and hugged him.
On their way home, they encountered two sharks that tried to eat them! But they missed and swam into a pole on a sunken ship!
As they continued their journey home they spotted what seemed like 100,000,000 pounds of gold in a valley on the ocean floor.
Once they got home they decided to go back and try and retrieve as much gold as possible.
They gathered around 10,000,000 pounds of the gold! From then on, they lived happily ever after.

Crazy Day
By Hannah
Jensen Beach, Fl
Grade 8

At 7:35 my alarm clock rang. Wait! No, it sang. It started to sing and bluebirds joined in. The blind flew open and I jumped out of bed.
The grass was lime green and trees bright red. The water was pink but tasted the same. Apples were yellow and oranges were green.
The food was like candy, sour and sweet but were all in their same shapes like jellied fruit cake. When I ran to the door I saw so much more. There were weird birds of all sizes, colors and shapes.
All around there were animals made of crazy combinations. Cats with fish tails, dogs with unicorn heads, and lions with rhino’s bodies. They were real friendly and calm.
Some danced to a rhythm and hopped all around. When I took it all in I looked all around for the old things and where they had gone. There were no houses, cars, fences and things.
Just one road that stretched very far. When I traveled down it, everything started to fade away. It got gloomy and dark like an old scary movie.
In the background there was a voice far away saying, “It’s time to wake up, It’s a band new day!” Then a bright flash of light blasted my eyes, and then all I could see were my mom’s big blue eyes. It was all a dream but a good one for sure.

Philip the Cherry Pie
By Juliette
Jensen Beach, Florida

In a bakery on the north side of town, there lived a cherry pie named Philip, Philip the cherry pie.
Philip and his friends always got into trouble, for they loved to have adventures. This usually led them into danger and getting into sticky situations.
One day, even though Philip was told to stay out of trouble, Philip didn’t listen and went off in search of his friends.
Philip found his friends in the park swinging on the swings and ran over to them.
When Philip reached his friends he excitedly said, “Hey guys! What do you want to do today?” Then one of his friends sneered, “Sorry but we don’t want to play with you anymore, because every time we do anything we always end up in trouble or danger and one of these days someone could get hurt or worse….eaten!”
“Ok,” said Philip sadly. “Well I don’t need you guys to have an adventure with anyways. I’ll have my own adventure, better then any of the ones before!” Right before Philip walked off, another of his friends warned him not to do that and that he could get eaten or hurt, but Philip didn’t listen and ran off.
After about thirty minutes of running, Philip realized that he didn’t recognize any of the buildings around him, and that he was lost. Philip started to panic and ran into a group of bad boys in a dark ally.
They started to taunt Philip and walk closer and closer to him. When Philip tried to run they ran after him. Nearly getting beat up and escaping with only a few crumbled crusts, he got away.
Philip hid in a trash can, and the thieves ran right by him. After a few minutes, when he thought the coast was clear, he jumped out of the trash can and ran home as fast as he could.
On the long trip home, Philip thought about the lesson he learned about always listening to what your mom tells you and to always do the right thing. Because if you don’t, you could end up in deep trouble.
When Philip finally reached his bakery he ran in and told his mom everything that happened and said that he would always listen to what she said. He also said that he would never go off on his own again because he learned his lesson for good!

Just Imagine!
By Lauren
Coral Springs, Florida

At exactly 10:33 p.m. a girl named Samantha would always go to sleep while cows were out dancing on the street. She would always see the moon stare at her like there was something in her teeth.
The moon came down and said to her “Hi, my name is Trisha.”
Samantha basically fell off her bed with surprise. Trisha asked her if she would like to see what she does every night while other kids are sleeping. So Samantha said, “okay”. She took her up there and if you were Samantha you could not imagine what her face looked like!
There was ice cream of all flavors, and the bright, yellow sun in the sky was dancing to the music with a frog named Albert playing the records.
Trisha said to Samantha “all you need to do is imagine”. It was about 12:00 midnight and Trisha took Samantha home; and every night at exactly 10:33 p.m., Trisha would float down a strawberry ice cream comb for Samantha to brush her hair. Now Samantha knows what the sun does at night when we think it goes to sleep.
And on Samantha’s 8th birthday, Trisha sent down a special book about their adventures in the sky!

The Werewolf vs. the Giant Spider
By Cameron
Hudson, New Hampshire

It was night. I saw a giant werewolf riding a dragon. Smoke came out of the werewolf’s nostrils. He was trying to fight a giant spider riding on another dragon. Both monsters were in the sky on their dragons.
The spider used his thunder and lightning weapon.
When the thunder and lightning struck the werewolf, you could almost see his bones—a man’s bones!
The werewolf drooled blood from his mouth, like lava steaming. It was now flying over a volcano, and when it blew, hot steaming lava hit the dragon and caused him to fly inside the hot volcano.
When he flew inside, he came across the eighty-headed Hydra. The werewolf fought the Hydra, who was the giant spider’s pet. The werewolf cut off one of the Hydra’s heads with a scimitar, but he forgot that Hydras’ heads grow back! He then remembered to have his dragon blow fire and burn the Hydra’s necks. He had won the volcano battle!
I saw the werewolf fly out of the volcano toward the giant spider. Flying by, he tore off one of the spider’s legs and tore off the spider’s pincers, but the spider stuck his lightning weapon in the werewolf’s eye.
They kept fighting until the werewolf was the winner. He then flew home on his dragon.

Tree’s Song
By Hannah
Plattsburgh, New York

Slowly I climbed the trail, to the forest. The autumn foliage was beautiful—reds, oranges, golds. I walked to my favorite tree—a tall oak that stood like a monarch among her subjects. I sat by her, my cheek resting against the bark. The wind rustled the leaves, sounding like music. The tree was singing, telling one of her many stories—a tale from her life.
Listen carefully, sang her leaves.
Listen to our tale. Of ash and stone, of rain and rock, of winds within the vale.
So she sang of lightning and of thunder here, of the winds, water and gale that stripped the branches bare.
She told of ice, she spoke of snow and sang out of the storm. As I listened, glad that winter fury was not the norm.
Ice and hail covered sapling and the tree years long ago.
Her whispering voice finished as the breeze grew soft and slowed.
I stayed there a bit longer, admiring the beautiful glow as the sun set on the western horizon. Then I rose, the melody of the tree’s song playing softly in my mind. It almost seemed she began a new song as I walked away; a new tale to weave for another young listener like me.

Conquering the Bedtime Blues
By Graham
Age: 11
Beachwood, Ohio

Some people are afraid of the doctor, some of the big green closet monster, but I am scared of the bedtime monster.
When the sky darkens and I feel tired my mom takes me to my bedroom. She turns out the lights and everything becomes black and that is when the monster attacks.
I lay in that dark room listening to all the creeks. I soon see a huge monster with black buttons as eyes and a huge sweater bottom. It squeaks at me and I try to see the nightlight. He is just sitting there near the closet door. I finally regained enough courage to see what the monster is. I walk over the creaky floorboards, “Creak, squeak, creak.
I get to the door and shout at the monster, but he doesn’t move. I touch him and find that he isn’t actually a monster he’s a sweater.
I pull the sweater off, and see the comforting light of the night-light.
I go back to my bed knowing there is no such thing as monsters, and I soon start to dream.

By Robbie
Age: 11
Beachwood,Ohio

Once upon a time there lived a boy named Billy. Billy really wanted to be a cowboy. Every night, when his parents sleep, he went out to the barn to play with the horses. He loved them, and his favorite horse was a stallion named Bruno. Billy and Bruno played all day and night. They did everything together including going to school!
One day Billy went to the barn to see Bruno, but Bruno was gone. He looked everywhere for him, but Billy didn’t see him anywhere!
Billy looked and looked even in his own house. Finally, Billy went to his dad and asked for help to find Bruno. Billy’s dad agreed, and they went out to find him.
They looked out on their farmland, pasture, barn, and even in their forest.
Then Billy’s dad said, “I give up! We might never find Bruno. I will just go inside and drink coffee.”
Billy was very sad. He said, “We can’t give up now!! Lets keep looking.”
Billy’s dad said no and he went inside, but Billy kept looking.
Later that day, Billy went into the barn to get some hay to tempt Bruno when he saw something move. Billy yelled, “Hello?” but there was no answer. Then Bruno jumped out of the hay and Billy cried, “Bruno, did you miss me?”

The Cat Who Wanted to be a Singer
By Bernie
Age 12
St. Petersburg, Florida

Have you ever heard about the cat who wanted to be a singer? Well, his name was Peter. Now Peter loved to sing, and he did every chance he got. His song often reflected his mood. If he was happy, he would sing a nursery rhyme. If he was sad, he would belt out some blues. One day, he decided to hit the road and look for someone who would recognize his talents.
He would sit on fences, practicing every night, only to be pelted with countless fruits.
“Why won’t anyone listen to me?” he mewed as he was walking down a dark alley. He found a jet-black trash bag and settled down for the night. Little did he know that the trash bag he was sleeping on was actually covering up the entrance to a night club…run by animals!
He woke up in the middle of the night, startled by the gruff voice beside him. “Excuse me sir, could you please move?” Peter immediately judged the voice as “friendly” and replied.
“Sorry, hold on a second.” He got off of the trash bag and watched as a huge bulldog walked past him and pushed it aside with ease. He then went down into a small hole in the ground. Peter followed with increasing curiosity. When they reached the bottom, Peter was stunned with awe. Animals were dancing, talking, eating. And in the center of it all was a stage with speakers blasting music.
“These guys need real entertainment. Not some cheap stereo system!” He trotted up to the stage and found a microphone. At first he was nervous, and stuttered frequently, but soon he was singing smoothly and incredibly. The others cheered loudly. And from then on, he would sing at Le Animal every night, the star of the show.

By Jake
Age 12

There once was a bear that lived in a cave,
    The bear was very brave.
One day the bear saw a stream,
    And heard a girl scream.
Trying to help,
He found the girl covered in kelp.
The bear cut her free,
    And she thanked him happily.
They went to the bear’s cave,
Where he made a nice cake.
They ate and ate,
    Until they were full.
Then the girl went home.
    The bear went to sleep,
And had some nice dreams.
    The next morning,
The girl was at his door,
    And they went to explore.
They played in the woods,
    And by the stream,
Then went inside, to have some ice cream.
    It started to get dark,
And the girl went home,
While the bear stayed in his cave.
The next day the bear went to town,
but the townsmen didn’t like him at all.
They chased him and chased him,
All the way up a hill,
Until…
The girl came running up the hillside,
Yelling and screaming, “The bear is my friend!”
So the townsmen let the bear go,
Back to his cave,
Where he remained for the rest of his days.

My Day at the Zoo
By Elana
Beachwood, Ohio

“Wow look at all of the animals” I gasped.
There were lion’s tigers and bears
Oh my!
Dolphins and fishes
Elephants too
This is what I did when I went to the Zoo!
Alligators, seals
Oh me! Oh my!
Creepy little crawlers
That fly in the sky
Hippos are big
Pandas are fat
Is that little monkey wearing a hat?
A dog at the zoo?
It cannot be true
Maybe a frog that sat on a log.
Many more animals too!
Birds and bugs
Leopards too!
This is what I did when I went to the zoo!

What Should I Be?
By Rotem
Age 11

What should I be? What should I be?
A fireman, a police officer, a dancer maybe.
A chef, an astronaut, a zookeeper, too,
So many more options, which one should I do?

What should I be? What should I be?
   A doctor is nice,
   A teacher is great,
In acting, it will be pleasant to participate!
   Everyone with their wishes,
   And me with mine,
They all decided in a past time.
Bobby is going to be lawyer,
   And Lisa a clown,
   Robby a dentist,
And Rebecca a princess with a crown!

What should I be? What should I be?

So many choices getting thrown at me.
   I like who I am, I don’t wanna change,
I’m proud of myself, I don’t think I’m strange!

What should I be? What should I be?
For now, I guess I should just be…

         ME!

How do you Travel?
By Jon
Age 11
Beachwood, Ohio

There are many ways for you to travel. I am Tom, and my favorite way to travel is by bike.
I ride bikes in the summer all around my city.
You can also travel by airplane. It is fun to look out the window when you are in a flying airplane. I fly in an airplane when I go somewhere very far away.
Another way to travel is by car. I drive in cars to my daily events.
If you don't want to fly in an airplane you can ride in a train. I think of trains as long cars that fit a lot of people. Unlike the other ways to travel a train runs on a track.
Something you can ride on is like a bike, but it is a motorcycle. It is like a bike, but it runs on gas.
If you have to go across a body of water you can go by boat. There are many different kinds of boats. I think of boats as cars on water.
You can also travel by roller skates, which are wheels on shoes. I love to roller skate around my neighborhood.
That is how I travel around.
How do you travel?

Bears
By Jotham
Beachwood, Ohio

Bears are mammals,
Born alive,
They live near the fish,
On which they thrive.
Baby bears named cubs,
Although they might bother,
For about six months,
They stay with their mother.
They live in burrows,
Under the ground,
In the winter they hibernate,
Without a sound.
Some are big,
Some are small,
When they grow up, though,
They become tall.
They live in the forest,
Near water and lakes,
Stay away from bears,
Because for your sake,
Bears are dangerous,
Vicious too,
Stay away from bears because,
I care about you.

The Plot to Ruin Christmas
By Josh
Beachwood, Ohio

Down in the South Pole where no one likes Christmas South Pole Joe and Jack Frost were plotting a plan.
“I’m sick of that Santa. Everyone is worshiping him. Why don’t people worship us?” complained Jack Frost.
“Considering that we’ve tried to steal Christmas every year,” added South Pole Joe.
“Let’s try again, together!” said Jack.
   ”You’re so right!” agreed Joe.
“We’re going to need a fool-proof plan though,” said Jack
Meanwhile in the North Pole Santa and the elves were getting ready for Christmas.
“Okay, everyone let’s wrap it up. We have seven hours left until Christmas,” said Santa.
“Santa, all the gifts are on the sleigh. You can come on board,” said Comet the lead reindeer. Santa and Comet walked together to the sleigh.
"Oh no! This can't be happening," said Santa. It seemed that the gifts were stolen! "I knew it! This is Jack Frost's work! Wait, he got help from South Pole Joe! Only he knows where my sleigh is!" added Santa.
"Hey Santa look over there, footprints!" said Comet excitingly. "Let's follow them." Santa, Comet, and the other reindeers followed the footprints. It took about three minutes to get to Joe and Jack.
"Why'd you guys take the presents?" asked Santa.
"We're sick of people worshiping you. They should worship us!" answered Jack.
"They don't. Children are just happy when I deliver gifts to them," said Santa. "If you give back the presents I'll let you deliver the gifts this year." Continued Santa.
"Hey! That's a good idea," said Joe. So Jack Frost and South Pole Joe rode the sleigh with the reindeers and delivered the gifts. It was their very first happy Christmas. After that Christmas Jack and Joe helped Santa with Christmas every year.

Halloween Frog

Once upon a time there lived a frog who never went trick-or-treating. And all her friends said; “You have to eat a little candy.”
Well as always she said; “It is Not Healthy!” in a big voice. Her name was Sure. Sure knew that Halloween was tomorrow so she did what her friends told her to do, and that was go trick-or-treating. Sure asked her mom to get her a Super-girl suite.
Sure was 8 years old and she never went trick-or-treating because Sure’s mom was always busy and Sure had to do her homework.
But this year Sure did her homework early and Sure’s mom was not busy so Sure got to go trick-or-treating. When it was time to go trick-or-treating Sure put on her Super-girl suite. And when Sure came home she had a bag full of candy. And Sure loved candy ever after.

Anna Veggie Head
By Jessie

Tuesday night at dinner in Anna’s house, Anna refused to eat her veggies.
“But Anna, carrots and peas and broccoli are good for you,” her mother reasoned.
“These foods don’t taste good!” Anna told her mother. Anna’s mother sent her right up to bed.
When Anna woke up the next morning, she looked in the mirror. She shrieked because her hair turned green and was shaped like a piece of broccoli! Her teeth turned into peas,, and her fingers looked as if they were mini carrots. Anna didn’t know what to do. Just then, she heard a tapping knock at her bedroom door. When the door opened, she saw an old lady made up of all the vegetables imaginable.
    The old lady said, “Hi,”
The world became gray and Anna began to spin. Her fingers turned back into little girl fingers. When she looked in front of herself, she saw a big bowl of carrots, broccoli and peas.
She heard the little old lady whisper, “Eat these and your teeth won’t ever be peas. You head will be normal, and your fingers won’t turn into carrots. Trust me; they’re good for you. These veggies are part of a balanced diet!”
Anna didn’t want to eat these veggies, she sat in silence, staring at the bowl. She picked up a pea and popped it into her mouth. A carrot went in next, then a piece of broccoli. Soon Anna devoured the whole bowl!
“These are good! I promise to always eat my veggies,” exclaimed Anna.
Soon Anna was back in her room in front of her dresser. She walked into her kitchen and found something that looked like her little brother, but was made of carrots, broccoli, and peas!

Vegetables

I dread the time of dinner. The time the vegetables come. There's carrots broccoli celery, oh my. The rules go as follows: "If you don't eat your veggies, you don't get dessert." I beg and beg not to eat the veggies, but I can't resist dessert. I picked up my carrot with a trembling hand. All of the sudden, the carrot jumped off my fork!
The carrot introduced himself as Sir Healthy the third. "If you don't eat your vegetables, they will take over the world!" the Carrot exclaimed. "Many years ago giant vegetables ruled the Earth. The dinosaurs were the vegetables' pets.
"One day rocks came falling from the sky destroying all the giant vegetables, turning them into little ones. The dinosaurs ate the little vegetables.
"We eat the vegetables, so they won't take over the world. Not because people like them! So please eat your vegetables." The carrot disappeared, and I never complained about eating my vegetables again.

Oodle the Poodle
By Sara
Age 11
Beachwood, Ohio

We just got Oodle, my Poodle.
I let him eat my entire yellow noodle.
Oodle the Poodle loves to doodle,
When he is not eating the entire noodle.
Then he sleeps all the night and day,
Until dinner, when I give him his noodle pay.
He sleeps in my room with me in the nights.
He never is hasty and never fights.
My mother gets mad, when I give him my beans,
But he won’t ever eat them, even with the queen.
I love him, and he loves me,
Too bad he won’t eat any kind of green peas.
I wish he would eat something other,
Than the things he loves like trying to eat my mother.
She gets kind of mad when he eats her dress,
But she is also unhappy when he makes his mess.
My friends think Oodles is crazy.
    I just call him lazy.
I wonder if I can keep Oodles in my home,
If he leaves will I make another poem.
You may ask why we call him Oodles.
Well, we call him Oodles because he eats,
Oodles and oodles of all our noodles.
    “Toodles,” says Oodle the poodle,
Who loves to doodle when not eating noodles.

The Tale of Betsy Broccoli
By Danielle
Age: 10
Beachwood, Ohio

The day Stacey started Kindergarten, she woke up and got ready to go to Hillridge Kindergarten. Her mommy drove her to school. Stacey was so excited.
When she got to school, she met all the boys and girls. Stacy’s teacher’s name was Mrs. DeShay. When Stacy’s mommy left, Mrs. DeShay told the whole class they were going on a surprise field trip tomorrow. Stacy was delighted!
When Stacy came home from school her mommy said, “We are having spaghetti and broccoli for dinner tonight.”
“Yuck!” yelled Stacy. She hated broccoli, but she had to deal with it. Her parents loved it.
The next day, Stacey got to school and was all ready to go on the field trip. They took a bus to a place that had trees all around.
Stacey’s class stepped out of the bus with smiles everywhere. They were so excited! They met a lady named Emily. She told them they would be seeing so many cool things that day.
Emily took them around the place. To Stacey’s surprise, the whole place turned out to be broccoli! She was so upset. Then out of the corner of her eye she saw a very interesting piece. It looked very old and not edible. Then Stacey heard, “Hey Stacey! Hey Stacey! Come over here!” Curious, she walked.
“Hi. I’m Betsy Broccoli, and I love little girls like you.”
    “Ummm… I don’t like broccoli.”
“Just try me! I taste so good, and I am so good for you!”
Stacey took a bite. “Yum!” said Stacey.
“Now always eat your broccoli! Bye!” said Betsy.
    “Bye!”
That was the weirdest day for Stacey. She ended up asking her mom for broccoli for dinner that night. Her mom was so surprised. Now she loved it!

Carl the Computer

I'm Carl the computer. I've observed the behaviors of children at your school. They are responsible, respectful, and kind.
The kids at school are responsible. Some kids like Josh The Jalapeño pick up trash and clean up. If someone loses something, they'll give it back. The kids don't lose their stuff.
A lot of kids are good friends and kind like Tom the Turnip. The friends at this school help each other. If there's a new kid, they'll help them and are nice to them. Some kids help their teacher. Most kids are kind.
Marc the monkey is the most respectful kid in school. He listens to teachers, he helps, he's kind, and he does everything to help! He's an amazing kid. Other kids pay attention, and others respect nice kind computers like me.
That's what I learned from spying, I mean observing the kids at your school in Ohio.

The Story of Day and Night
By Alex
Age: 11
Beachwood, Ohio

Do you know the story of day and night? Once there were three red apples and five brown benches. The benches were great friends with the apples.
One day, an apple said to a bench, “ Look at that yellow sun. Do you see the yellow sun?”
The bench replied, “ Yes, I see the yellow sun, but do you see the two white clouds?”
The apple said, “ I see the white clouds. Isn’t it a beautiful day?
As the day passed, new things appeared in the sky. The apple said, “ Do you see the bright moon?”
The bench said, “ I see the moon, but do you see the ten stars?”
The apple replied, “ I see the ten stars. Isn’t the night sky beautiful.”
Now do you see that every morning the sun rises, and every evening the sun goes down? Do you now know that the moon comes up in the evening and goes down a little before the morning. This happens day and night every day of the year.

The Haunted House
By Sam

One day, as I walked home from my boring old school, I came upon a house I had never seen before. I kept on walking. As I walked by, I heard a faint creaking noise. It was coming from the house. I stepped onto the stoop.
Just before I knocked, the door cracked open. I saw an old wrinkled face. I ran until I couldn’t run anymore screaming,
“Witch!!!! AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” The door slammed shut. I ran home and told my mom everything.
    She just said, “You’re crazy!”
The next day, I walked past the house, and once more, I heard the sound. This time, I was determined to not run away. Just like the first time, as I stepped up, the door opened. I made a move to run, but my legs wouldn’t budge. I saw the old face again.
This time the old woman said “Hello, sonny boy.” The door was now fully opened. She was a scrawny, little woman who didn’t look mean enough to be a witch. She offered me candy, and I accepted it. I looked at my watch and saw I was ten minutes late. I had to run the whole entire way to school.
The next day, I walked up to the house. It was a Saturday, so I had a bunch of time. I walked up to the stoop, and again, the door opened before I knocked. She invited me in. I accepted. I saw all of the beautiful paintings and chandeliers she had. Now I knew why she never left her house.

The Sharing Rug
By Urs

The sharing rug is a most magical place,
You can show whatever you want.
First it was Billy’s turn,
Billy brought in a teddy bear.
The other children admired the bear,
While Billy passed the toy around.
The next child’s turn was coming soon,
This boy Charly, brought in a stuffed baboon.
Once again this toy was passed,
They worshipped it as if it was magical.
The children were very nice,
The next one to share, brought in a pair of giant dice.
All of the kids admired the toy,
One child even screamed with joy.
At the sharing rug, their was never a fight,
This was because it was magical.
After the day was over,
    The children all left.
When the kids came back the next day,
The sharing rug, was not there.
They searched and searched,
Until they could search no more.
So they decided to go home,
And come back the next day.
When they came back the rug was there,
Only this time, it was shining bright.
The kids were overjoyed to see the rug,
If they could of, they would have given it a hug.
The rug was back, and everyone was happy,
The magical rug was ready for more toys to be shared.

MY CLASS REUNION
By Nicole
Miami Fl

One day I had a dream that I was grown up and I got a letter from my old elementary school. My school name was Bunche Park Elementary. The letter was for a class reunion. It said, ''Nicole Turner, We Are Asking You To Come To Your Fifth Grade Reunion On The 5th Of May at 6 o'clock. If You Are Coming Wear Comfortable Clothes Cause There Will Be Dancing. After I read it I said, ''I can't wait to go.
So May 5th finally came, I had my clothes ironed and ready. So at 5:25 I got ready and left my house about 5:50, it only take me 10 minute to get to the school. While I was driving there I was so excited, I couldn't even blink my eyes.
When I got to the school and walked in, it looked the same, exactly the same, new color paint on the walls but besides that everything looked the same. I went to the cafeteria, it was so pretty how that decorated it, and the colors were green and yellow. I saw a lot of people I know like, my fifth grade teacher, Mr. Turner, my friends, Carrie, Jasmine, Na'tasha, Jazmine, and many more people I know. Now I see why they said wear comfortable clothes, because there was dancing. When the party was over, I said good-bye to every one and left. While I was driving home I a-said to my self ''I had so much fun with my friends and teacher, I missed them so much.
When I got home and went to sleep, I woke up out of m dream. Then I hopped out of bed and told everyone about my exciting dream.

The Bathroom Parody
By Prajwal
Stone Mountain, GA

Dang it! Testing! I thought and groaned as the teacher passed out the testing booklets. “If you need to go to the bathroom, please do so now” she said.
Since I was restless, I decided to go use the restroom, even though I didn’t have to. As I was going to the boy’s restroom, I heard the loudest, most high-pitched screams heard in the history of Trickum Middle School ever! Since the girl’s bathroom was right next to the boy’s bathroom, I decided to take a peek.
What happened was this: I trip over a lunch-box and fall face flat on the cold, hard bathroom floor. You know when you fall and everything happens in slow-mo? Well that’s what happened here. As I looked up, all of the girl’s mouths were hanging wide open.
Wait a second! I had my hoody on! I might actually get away with this without being seen!
I run out of the bathroom doing my version of the 200 yd dash (not that fast) just as the girls start to scream their heads off.
I enter the classroom while the teacher heads out to check the situation.
Well, I guess it was the boys who were laughing, I think deeply. I take off my hoody and laugh the same girly laugh and giggle.

Happy Halloween
By Rinayah
Miami,Fl

“Remember kids the school’s Halloween party is on Saturday” said Mrs. Satcher.
    “Ummmm! What time, said Joey."
    “7:00” she said.
It’s a typical week at Bayside Junior High until strange things start happening like when teachers have something on their desks they turn around and when they turn back it’s gone. Also, they would write on the board and suddenly it would disappear.
Finally someone asks would there be entertainment and if so who. Mrs.Satcher started to say yes, but something came over her, and she paused for a couple seconds and said no there won’t be any entertainment in a deep voice.
“Mrs.Satcher, are you ok?” asked the 6th grade class.
“Mrs.Satcher isn’t here any more, she’s gone away for a while” said a dark scary voice.
Joey would be stupid enough to ask when is she coming back. Everyone hits him in the back of the head with papers.
Everyone ran out of the classroom and bumped into the assistant principle Mr.Barker. He walks them back to class while they are telling him what happened.
Mr.Barker goes in the class to talk to Mrs. Satcher and never comes out.
The next day everyone was so terrified that they did not come to school. Instead, they stayed home and had nightmares of the ghost in Mrs.Satchers' body. But they weren’t going to let her ruin their fun. So on Saturday everyone got dressed up in their costumes and headed off to the party.
When they got to the party they saw Mrs. Satcher, they asked her what was wrong with her on Thursday and she said it was a joke I play on my students because they always try to prank me on Halloween.
“You got us good Mrs. Satcher,” said Joey.

Three Poems
By Henry
Beachwood, Ohio

A Polar Bear
A polar bear
    Has a coat to wear,
Of pure white,
    To protect from frost bite.

A Flower
Growing on the ground,
    A flower can be found.

The power of a flower,
    Is to attract a bee,
who then makes honey.

Mold
I hate that cold,
    Slimy mold,
Growing on the cheese,
    Throw it out, please!

Why is the mold here?
    It could kill a deer!

But if you don’t let cheese get old,
The mold won’t grow so bold

“Hey mom have you seen Princess”, said April.
“No I have not”, said mom.
“I think Princess is lost”, said April. “I was playing with her outside last. Then you called me in for supper and I put her down in her house so I could freshen up. After I ate supper she was gone. I can not go long without her”.
“April are you sure you left her in her house” said mom.
“Yes I am. At least that’s what I think”, replied April.
“Well if you really want her you have to look for her”, said mom.
April searched up and down and all around the house looking for Princess. She retraced her steps but she just couldn’t find. “Mom I looked everywhere and I just couldn’t find her.”
Mom replied “April you need to start caring about your stuff.”
Mom lead April outside to where she was playing with Princess last. Princess was lying in the dirt. April ran straight to her picked her up and hugged her. April was once happy again.
April has learned a valuable lesson. To care about things. April thanked her mother and gave her a hug.

I'm Lost
By Kristel

I'm lost. My head is spiraling out of control with out stopping.
I'm alone. No-one to talk to, no-one to keep me company, no-one to lift my spirit or push me toward what I really want at some time or another. I'm just a lonely little puppy that's lost, and can't figure out what is going on in this crazy world around me.
There's more to life then just yourself you have to have friends. Right now I'm in my two-storey blue house, that matches my current mood, dark and gloomy. And I'm alone.
Out of no where there is a knock at my door. "A guest!" I murmur excitingly to my self. Speed walking to the door I say to myself "Not to fast, it might look like I'm busy, and whomever they are might leave.". Moments from the door with the buzzer is ringing in my head with extreme force. The instant I open to what feels like a portal that will bring me into another dimension of happiness I pause, and said to myself "OK, this is your chance to start a new mood. I finally lay my hand upon my shiny handle of the door. With that annoying ring in my ears and as soon as I open the door, silence is all I hear and nothing is all I see. I slam the door in disappointment and fall to my knees. I gradually have the strength to rise to my feet and face the fact that I'm going to always be alone.
Like a slug I drag my feet up the stairs, in to my room and plop down on my dull, dull, bed. My room feels like a jail. My mind cluttered with things I should've done, would've done but unsurprisingly didn't do, I feel like I failed in living my life.
It must have been at least three hours before I drifted off into a deep sleep. A normal person probably would dream of a perfect world, they would have all the money they needed, the space, time, and maybe unnecessary essentials, to a great life, but all I dream about is a world after I die. Would anyone notice I'm gone?
    Would YOU?

The Lucky Penny
By Nyla
Miami, Florida

There was a young girl named Christina who found a magical penny on a cold winter morning.
She walked to school, 5 blocks away from her house. She thought about her parents when they were together. They had a divorce a year ago.
She lives with her mom but she thinks it was a bad idea.
Christina started to pick up speed because of the strong wind. Then, from behind she heard some one calling her name.
“Christina!”. She looked back, it was her home girl, Tiffany Crooms.
    “What’s up” she yelled.
I stopped so she could catch up. Tiffany was a nice ghetto type of girl but was smart. She is so smart that she skipped kindergarten.
As we walked toward the school an elderly woman pushed me and she dropped all of her coins. Tiffany and I tried to help but she just ran.
“The markings on this is very weird.” said Tiffany.
As they reached to touch it the bell to the High school rang so loud that it could be heard a block away. Before they left they both grabbed a penny.
Tiffany wished that she would not be late to school. In a flash they were the first one’s in the classroom.
“Wow that is some weird stuff.”
As the day past they both figured out that it was a LUCKY PENNY.
“So what are you going to wish for now?” asked Tiffany.
“The only thing is to get my parents back together!” and it worked!
Christina was very happy. So every time they wanted something they got it just by making a wish.

Whew! Whoa! How cool is it to actually be a bird well I can definitely tell you that because I am one, living life as a bird is really exciting, sometimes.
The way I would say that it is exciting because I like the way I get to fly up in the sky flapping my feathery wings that feels so soft also I get to look down and see everything in my path but the part I don't like is that I have to fly to south everytime the winter comes, because everytime it's hot where you live it's cold in the south and I began to get so cold and I start to shiver , most of the time you can take the coldness but I can't, look at our body weight difference.
The food that I eat all the time is worms that comes out of the ground and I know that you are probably thinking eww gross but to me I know that it is so good. I would like to know what kind of food do you eat??
I don't have a big family like you probably do it's just me, my sister, my mom and of course my dad, I have one best friend and her name is Nicole but you can call her my sister because that's what everyone calls us especially a boy named Justin and I am surrounded by a lot of associates that I can hardly name but I am ok with that.
I don't have a big house like you I actually live in home called a "nest" and that's where me and my family stays for now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Rainbow

I woke up to the cock-a-doodle-doo of our red rooster. The yellow sun shined through my windows, and I pulled my warm green blanket off. I looked out the window, and I saw the sky. It was a pretty shade of light blue. There was a purple airplane gliding through the sky.
“Creak, squeak!” I walked on our squeaky brown floorboards. I went down the black stairs to get to the living room to see my dog, Marshmallow.
Marshmallow’s pink tongue hung out of his mouth as he barked. “Woof! Woof!” Our white dog barked at an orange and brown cat.
    “Meow,” it said.
I went to a carnival today. While I was on the fun rides, the yellow sun shined in my eyes. It hurt my eyes, so I covered them up. I bought myself a souvenir. Guess what it was? A camera! I hoped there would be something great to take a picture of!
“Oh no! It’s raining!” Mom said. “Let’s go inside!” Mom and I went inside for a while.
After the rain, I saw a rainbow in the sky! It was beautiful! It was red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, and pink! I snapped pictures! I counted as a snapped. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten! I took ten pictures of that beautiful rainbow. I can’t wait to go home to show my siblings and friends! They won’t believe what I saw! I hope they like the pictures!

What is Being Nice?
By Andrew
Age: 10
Beachwood, Ohio

Hi, I am Tony the Trashcan. What does really being nice mean? I watch every student at Eastwood School, watching students that show how to be nice. Do you know any students like this?
Bob Corn showed friendliness in the cafeteria yesterday. A new kid sat alone at a table, very sad. Bob sat with the boy even though his friends saved a seat by them. I felt touched after seeing that.
Next, I saw unselfishness from a girl named Cindy Sausage. In Cindy's class, someone brought cupcakes as a birthday treat. Cindy loved cupcakes! Everyone stood in line for their two cupcakes, and Cindy stood at the end of the line. When it became her turn in line, she received the last two cupcakes. This made her happy. Cindy noticed one sad child without a cupcake, a disabled child. Cindy felt so bad because no one offered him a cupcake. She had to do something, so she stood up and handed him one of her cupcakes. That almost made me cry after seeing her sharing one of her cupcakes.
My last student I would like to share with you is a student that showed politeness. That student is Marcus Johnson. On the last day of school, everyone received a popsicle from the teachers. No one said thank you except Marcus. I think Marcus should receive an extra popsicle after that.
I hope you and all your friends follow these examples and start some of your own. So remember, your trashcans are always watching you.

Football…!
By Terrence
Miami, FL

In 2004, John's football team, the Miami Gardens Chargers, went undefeated and was invited to play in the Fed Ex Orange Bowl. John was so excited about playing at the Orange Bowl Stadium.
The Orange Bowl game against the Plantation Wildcats began about 9:00 a.m. John and his teammates were very confident that the game was going to be easy. The wildcats came out ready to play. During the second quarter, John sacked the quarterback, "BOOM" and he dropped the ball. John was on fire.
The first play of the game, John caught a pass and ran for 5 yards before being tackled. John ran the ball several times in the first half but, was unsuccessful. At this time John was really getting angry, but he remained focused. He really wanted to make a touchdown because he hadn't made a touchdown in the last two weeks.
In the fourth quarter John's team was winning 19 -6. John's coach made a play just for John. They ran a double reverse to the right and then to the left.
The Wildcats didn't know who had the ball.
John ran as fast as he could to the left side line to get around the corner. John was unstoppable.
The crowd was roaring. John's heart was beating so fast and all he could see was the end zone.
John continued to run with all his might and he made the touchdown.

One day, three sisters named Kim, Monique, and Gabrielle were looking through the newspaper. Kim was looking through the ads and found that the famous popstar, Bababaloo was coming to Miami, Florida. When Kim saw that, she screamed so loud Monique and Gabrielle asked
    “What happened?”
Kim said “Our favorite popstar Bababaloo is coming to our town in 4 days”.
Then Gabrielle said what about our family trip that’s in 4 days too.
The three sisters looked at each other they all screamed “mom, dad”.
Mom and dad ran up the stairs as fast as they could.
Mom and Dad asked “Is everyone okay and what happened?”
Kim said our favorite popstar Bababaloo is coming to town in 4 days.
Mom said, “Isn’t that when we go on our family trip?”.
Gabrielle said, “I know, but instead of going to Bush Gardens can we go see Bababaloo. Please.”
Mom and Dad whispered in each others ears. When they finished, they looked at their daughters and replied, yes.
The three sisters hugged their parents.
Mom and Dad asked, “Okay, now where will this Bababaloo be playing?”.
The girls replied, “The Hard Rock Café casino”.
Their parents said that they would be leaving in two days, and that the girls needed to pack quickly so they can go to the concert.
Two days later, the family was on their way to the Hard Rock Café. When they got there they checked into the hotel, and asked are kids allowed to be in the casino while Bababaloo is performing.
The cashier said, “There is no Bababaloo performance this Friday. Bababaloo is playing next Friday, sorry ma’am.”
Mom said, “That’s alright we’ll stay for two weeks. Thank You”.
The family stayed for another two weeks and enjoyed their family vacation.

My Silly Pants
By Bryan

My silly pants, how silly they can be, they are always counting to three.
My silly pants, keep me awake, to count to 1, 2, 3.
My silly pants, they love to count, just like 4, 5, 6, 7.
My silly pants, how I wish they would leave.
For they always count, count to 8, 9, 10.
Oh my silly pants, they also like to spell, they spell B, E, E.
My silly pants, they always want to spell and count, why won’t they stop?
My silly pants, how the tickle me, they are always spelling the alphabet, A, B, C.
My silly pants, will you take them from me?
They can spell, count, and any of these.
Oh my silly pants, please take them from me!

Castle in the Garden
By Natham
Age 10
Beachwood, Ohio

Once upon a time in a garden far far away, Cherry Man lived. The garden had three cherry trees, an apple tree, thirty grape vines, an orange tree, and one lemon tree.
Only one person would want to take over this garden, that’s Evill Lemon, Jr. He’s been evil ever since Evill Lemon cloned him. Evill Lemon died because Cherry Man shot him in a very tense battle. Unfortunately, Evill Lemon left a guide for Evill Lemon, Jr. on how to be evil.
Evill Lemon, Jr. built a very large castle in the middle of the garden. The fifty-foot high walls kept Evill Lemon, Jr. safe. It was hard to get into Evill Lemon, Jr. castle because he had people he hired to shoot arrows at Cherry Man or any of his friends, family, or other super heroes. Also, Evill Lemon, Jr. had chariots and horses and an army of 1,000,009 men.
Cherry Man’s went to the leader of the garden to request the Army of Peace to help Cherry Man defeat Evill Lemon, Jr. Once Cherry Man got there, he asked for the Army of Peace from the leader.
The leader thought about it, and then said, “You may have the Army of Peace.”
Cherry Man set off flying one of his superpowers to the Army of Peace’s secret base in Potatoville. Since he had permission to use the army of peace, he wanted to tell the Army of Peace what the plan was. They secretly attacked the next day. The fight was tough because Evill Lemon, Jr. had not given up.
Evill Lemon, Jr. got squashed and made into lemon-aid. Everyone was happy except Evill Lemon, Jr.

People Can Lick Too
By Eli
Age 10
Beachwood, Ohio

Once, on a rainy night, in a dark house, sat a young woman. Most things scared her, so whenever she got too afraid she called her dog and he would lick her fingertips.
When she went to bed that night, she heard a creaking noise coming from the kitchen. She whistled and her dog came to lick her. The woman put her hand down from the high bed and the dog licked her hand, but instead of the warm, rough, tongue of a dog, she felt a soft, cold tongue.
She figured the dog caught a little cold and that was why she felt what she did, and fell asleep.
The next morning she opened her eyes, stood up, and walked groggily to the bathroom. There, hanging from a rope, was her bloody, dead, dog! Also, on the mirror written in the dog's blood, spelled the words

                      People can lick too!

And Eli's story is the last entry for the October month of our contest.
